What this tracker shows

The bar shows every source supplying the GB grid at this moment: gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, biomass, grid-scale storage and imports through the undersea interconnectors. Wind and solar include estimates for small "embedded" generators connected to local networks, which the national grid can't meter directly.

Carbon intensity

Carbon intensity is the grams of CO₂ emitted for each kilowatt-hour consumed. Gas plants emit about 394 g/kWh and coal about 937 g/kWh, while wind, solar, nuclear and hydro are close to zero at the point of generation. Running the washing machine when intensity is low reduces its footprint.

Where the data comes from

Figures are half-hourly settlement or 5-minute estimates and may be revised by the data providers.
