How Australian take-home pay is worked out
Salary-sacrificed super comes off your pay first. Income tax is charged in brackets above the $18,200.00 tax-free threshold, then reduced by the low income tax offset (up to $700.00).
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, phased in above $27,222.00. HELP repayments are 15% of income above $67,000.00, rising to 17% above $125,000.00.
Your employer also pays the superannuation guarantee of 12% on top of your salary. This doesn't reduce your take-home pay.
