How South African take-home pay is worked out
Pension and retirement annuity contributions are taken off first, up to 27.5% of income or R 350 000,00 a year. Tax is then charged on the rest using the brackets below, and reduced by the primary rebate of R 17 235,00, plus age rebates of R 9 444,00 from 65 and R 3 145,00 from 75.
Medical scheme members get a tax credit of R 364,00 a month for themselves, R 364,00 for the first dependant and R 246,00 for each extra dependant. UIF is 1% of pay, capped at earnings of R 17 712,00 a month.
