How Canadian take-home pay is worked out

RRSP contributions and the enhanced part of CPP come off your income first. Federal tax is charged in brackets, then reduced by non-refundable credits — the basic personal amount ($16,452.00), the Canada employment amount, and your base CPP and EI — at the lowest rate of 14.00%.

Provinces charge their own tax on the same income with their own brackets and credits. Ontario also adds a surtax when provincial tax is high. Quebec has its own tax brackets and receives a 16.50% reduction in federal tax.

Outside Quebec, CPP is 5.95% of pensionable earnings, plus CPP2 at 4%. In Quebec, QPP replaces CPP at 6.30%, with QPP2 at 4%. Quebec employees also pay QPIP at 0.43% and a reduced EI rate of 1.30%.
