How the tile calculation works

Tiles: area × (1 + waste %) ÷ tile face area, rounded up, then divided by tiles per box and rounded up again.

Adhesive: a notched trowel leaves ridges that compress to roughly half the notch depth. Most cement-based adhesives use about 1.5 kg per m² per mm of bed, so a 6mm notch uses ~4.5 kg/m².

Grout uses the industry formula kg = (L + W) ÷ (L × W) × tile depth × joint width × 1.6 × area with dimensions in mm and 1.6 as the typical grout density.

Choosing a trowel

Larger tiles need a thicker bed for full coverage. For floor tiles over 300mm, back-butter the tile as well and add around 20% more adhesive. Always check the manufacturer's coverage figures on the bag.
