How US take-home pay is worked out
Your 401(k) and other pre-tax deductions come off first. The standard deduction ($16,100.00 for single) is then subtracted, and what's left is taxed in federal brackets — each rate only applies to the slice of income inside that bracket.
FICA is charged on top: Social Security at 6.2% up to $184,500.00, and Medicare at 1.5% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% above $200,000.00. 401(k) contributions don't reduce FICA; health insurance and HSA deductions through your employer do.
State tax varies widely — from 0% in states like Texas and Florida to over 10% at the top in California. Enter your approximate state rate for an estimate.
